When arriving for the first time to Bucharest, Romania, everything might seem strange. Things are new and exciting but nothing unusual. Some things are really different, everybody speaks Romanian, a Latin language like Catalan, Italian, French, Portuguese, and Spanish. The national currency is called LEU (plural LEI) – meaning in Romanian Lion. Its financial symbol is RON. The exchange rate of the Romanian Central Bank is about 1 EUR = 4.40 RON. Nevertheless at first sight this might seem overwhelming, actually, it is not. Follow this guideline and you will be fine.
Find an ATM and get some local currency: Lei. Do not take out too much cash, RON 100 would be enough. You may also buy Lei from the exchange offices inside the airport, but the rate is not very convenient!
